Low Ranks Are Best In Lowball Poker Games
There are several poker games where the low poker hand succeeds all of the pot (example: Razz, Lowball poker) or a part of the pot (example: Omaha High-Low, 8 or better).
Low poker hands are ranked in the reverse arrangement of the normal poker hand rankings with a very few variations.
There are three general forms of low poker hand rankings:
- Ace to five
- Ace to six
- Deuce to Seven (straight and flush is considered a high)
- Deuce to Six (straight and flush is simply ignored)
In addition, in a few games such as Omaha High Low there is a rule that the hand should as well qualify to succeed the low half of the pot.
In all types of lowball poker while splitting ties the cards of high value are evaluated first then the cards of lesser value are evaluated and so on.
A hand holding 7S 6D 5H 4C 2D will rank higher than 8C 5C 4D 3D 2H as the high ranking card in the first hand (7) is lower than the ranking card (8) in the second hand.
In Ace to Five games, straights and flushes do not influence the ranking process and they are simply ignored. Ace has the lowest value. The top hand is Ace-2-3-4-5 of any suit.
In Ace to Six games, straights and flushes are considered as high hands, the best hand has A-2-3-4-6.
In many of the lowball games, it can so happen you are confused about what you are playing for, whether it is a A-6 or A-5, it will be a holy mess, if you ask what you are playing. Better, check the screen.
